Model United Nations (MUN) is an activity organized worldwide by official and non-governmental organizations specifically for young people. In this activity, young students role-play as diplomats representing various countries, simulating a United Nations conference. Through firsthand experiences such as presenting viewpoints, debating policies, voting, and crafting resolutions, participants become familiar with the operational procedures of United Nations conferences. They gain insights into the impact of significant global events on their future and understand the roles they can play. As early as the era of the League of Nations, American students were already organizing activities simulating League of Nations conferences.

The establishment of the United Nations in 1945 sparked widespread enthusiasm among people worldwide. In 1951, the University of California, USA, pioneered the formation of a Model United Nations (MUN) team, marking the beginning of the popularity of MUN activities. After more than 60 years of development, MUN activities have become a globally recognized form of educational engagement. Each year, nearly four hundred international MUN conferences take place in over 50 countries across five continents. Participants, including students and teachers, come from over 100 countries, with a total attendance exceeding four million people.

Model United Nations (MUN) activities didn’t enter China until the 1990s. In 2001, Peking University established the Model United Nations Association, becoming the first student organization in Chinese universities dedicated to conducting MUN activities. In 2005, Peking University hosted the first National High School Model United Nations Conference, popularizing this activity among high school students in China.
